Gap is 735 meters (2411 feet) above sea level and has more than 40,000 inhabitants. It's the highest préfecture in France. It's 185 km from Marseille and 692 km southeast of Paris.
It has over 300 days of sunshine each year, and average daily high temperatures range from 28 degrees (83° F) in August to 6 degrees (42° F) in December. Average lows range from 12 degrees (53° F) in August to -4 degrees (24° F) in December. The temperature changes quickly depending on the sun.
It's normally very dry, but it can get a lot of snow during the winter. It's the home to many alpine sports. In fact, Gap is one of three cities trying to be France's bid to the 2018 Winter Olympics!
